Palo Santo is sustainably harvested and carefully regulated: only limbs and branches that fall to the ground may be taken. They must remain on the ground to "season" for at least 4 years before harvest. The longer they remain on the ground, the richer the licopenes. Prayers are said when they are collected.

Traditionally, herbs are burned to embellish one's own scent in prayer- to improve one's offering. By wafting the smoke over you (smudging), it is believed that one's intentions and prayers travel safely where they need to go, and up to the sky. Smudging also adds the qualities of each Plant Spirit to one's invocations.
