Gorgeous, bright teal-turquoise colored *cultured* New Zealand Abalone Shells, PLUS Sage (Choose your Sage or Cedar);
This is a sweet and simple Smudge kit with one, 4-5" Sage bundle, and 5-6" Abalone bowl~ plus detailed "Smudging" instructions (details below).
This is the same Haliotis genus as our California Pacific abalone, but is called Paua to Pacific Island tribes.
*To Māori, pāua are recognized "taonga", or treasure, esteemed both as kaimoana (food) and as a valued resource for traditional and contemporary arts and crafting. Pāua are frequently used to represent the eyes in Māori carvings because the shells color and brilliance is traditionally associated with the stars or whetū. The star-Paua are the symbolic eyes of ancestors that gaze down from the night sky onto the People. Paua harvest is strictly regulated (moreso than Mexico's current fishery). These shells, and most of the export market is grown in mariculture farms, so the source is sustainable.
SUSTAINABLE:
Abalone are special for many reasons; their food is a delicacy, the shells are large and filled with luminous rainbow colors, and they are found deep offshore in cold Pacific waters; it takes much work to find and retrieve them.
To take the pressure of over-harvesting stocks, these New Zealand abalone are sustainably grown and harvested. They hold bright turquoise blues/teals; their center sports a patch where the animal was attached. Abalone shells have natural breathing holes in them on the sides, usually 4-6, depending on size. NOTE: If you use your shell to hold your bundles- we recommend adding a 1" layer of dirt or sand to the bottom (apply tape over the holes).
NEVER use a shell in place of a heat proof bowl. DO NOT burn charcoal in your shell, with or without sand; abalone shells will crack when over heated.
Each shell varies with it's own depth; all have unique colors, varying from pearlescent teal- blue/ greens, browns, black, pink and purples hues. Each shell is polished bright inside, lightly varnished, and left rough on the out, (barnacles removed so they lay flat- see photos).
**Listing** I carefully inspect and choose each shell. These are beautiful specimens.

**"What is SMUDGING?** The Native Indian practice of burning sage/herbs for Blessing, offering, and creating Sacred Space; using smoke from Sacred plants and herbs- to cleanse one’s self, space, and energy; practiced by tribes across North, Central, and South America for centuries.
When burning herbs for "smudging", an abalone shell is the holding bowl for your herb bundle, wand, or smudge stick. A shell traditionally provides the Water element to your ceremony, for a balance of elements in your ritual. NEVER use charcoal in a shell. For holding bundles- a layer of soil or sand is highly recommended.
