If there is one scent to embody the vast American wild west, it would belong to this plant: Desert Sagebrush. If you were to stand on a high desert plateau, and look across the frontier horizon over a grey-green desert sea, the first thing to greet you on the desert breeze, would be the sweet, light essence of Desert Sage~ Artemesia tridentata. Not a true sage, this Desert Spirit is the most abundant plant growing across the western US. landscape from Colorado to California-especially through Utah, Nevada, and New Mexico. This particular bundle was grown in an area between Taos and Chaco Canyon, New Mexico, in the high desert plain, in pinyon-juniper woodlands.

**Current and Traditional Uses of Desert Sage*** For thousands of years Native Peoples on all continents have used sage for practical and spiritual uses.
**"What is SMUDGING?** The Native Indian practice of burning sage/herbs for Blessing, offering, and creating Sacred Space; using smoke from Sacred Plants/herbs- to cleanse oneself, space, and energy in gratitude and prayer; practiced by by tribes across North, Central, and South America for centuries.
**Sage is a perfect Plant Spirit to help you create sacred space. It will clear a space of unwanted energies when offered/ burned. Its smoke will carry your own intentions into being. Ideal for new beginnings, re-claiming your space, ridding of the old, and ritually "clearing the air." Waft its smoke over you, blessing yourself, tools, and your living/working spaces.
** Desert Sage is ideal for sweetening your environment and lightening your surroundings. It is also about the element Space or Spirit; recognizing our internal space, gaining clarity, and creating more in and around us- so that we can see as far as we can see through our situation (great for meditation). When I am not sure what to do next, I invite the spirit of Desert Sage to fill my rooms and my heart so I can see more clearly. Desert Sage has a unique sweetness to it, a bit lighter than CA white sage, which has a musky sweetness. All sages have the same clearing/cleansing affects.
**For me, there is a comfort in the sweetness of desert sage; just having it sitting in my space, in my abalone bowl, filling the room with its feathery lightness (like its tiny leaves) lifts the spirit. Burning it in ceremony brings another set of sensations.**
Desert Amulet: **Obsidian**
Obsidian is said to be a quick-acting stone that absorbs negativity from the environment, (making it a good companion with your sage: it will add a zing of power to your ceremony!) Said to instantly soothe and calm a worried mind, Obsidian is a powerful grounding stone to calm both mind and heart. Should be cleansed often under running water.
Obsidian is formed when volcanic lava comes into contact with water; this forces it to cool so quickly that it doesn’t have time to crystallize resulting in a stone with a shiny, glassy texture.
**PLEASE use care in burning your herb bundles** Do not leave a burning smudge wand unattended. Take extra care around children and pets. When finished burning, run the tip under running water to make sure the burning ember inside is fully extinguished. Hang it to dry for your next use.
